Pro-Hamas propagandists disrupt Sydney University Jewish students’ event

The Australasian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS) has condemned the disruption of a peaceful speaker event this evening at Sydney University by pro-Hamas propagandists, including the near-punch of university security personnel.

A few minutes into the speech of Dr Yoaz Hendel, former adviser to Benjamin Netanyahu and head of the Institute for Zionist Strategies (IZS), the Socialist Alternative linked students began yelling pro-Hamas propaganda and chants.

Dr Hendel responded to their assertions of Israeli responsibility for deaths in Gaza by asking, “do you know Hamas is using UN schools to launch rockets against Israel? Do you know Hamas is killing their own people?”

After claims of discriminatory rules Dr Hendel pointed to the thousands of draconian rules in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and other Middle Eastern countries.

The students, who clearly never intended to stay, left just minutes into their yelling.

"The people who sit here and shout are not liberals. They think they are helping human rights but they are not," Dr Hendel said after they left.

“Tonight’s antics show once again that these people are more concerned with being disruptive and detrimental to the public dialogue than reaching peaceful solutions,” said AUJS Political Affairs Director Matthew Lesh.

“We hosted this event with peaceful intent, to hear from a speaker and inform our members, not to see petty tactics to intimidate Jewish students."

This follows the University of Sydney Student Representative Council passing a deeply offensive and alienating pro-Hamas motion.

“AUJS is calling for and working towards peaceful dialogue and safety for Jewish students on campus in these difficult times,” Mr Lesh continued.
