Detailed checklist and documentation for participants can be viewed and downloaded here

The Academy program is AUJS' premiere short-term Israel Program. It is AUJS' oldest program and offers a high quality comprehensive introduction to Israel, its people and its culture. The Academy program runs for 41 days and covers the entire length and breadth of Israel. AUJS Academy is intended for participants aged 17 (school leavers) – 22. AUJS runs numerous Academy groups each year. Each group has between thirty to forty participants from across Australasia. Two Australian and two Israeli madrichim lead each Academy group.

Core themes of the program include Modern Zionism, Jewish expression, Social Justice & Interfaith, Historical Israel, Tikkun Olam through volunteering, and contemporary Israel.

The Academy program contains a 5-day mifgashim (encounter) experience when 5 Israeli university students join each group. Academy also includes two, five day option periods - the Spectial Interest Weeks. AUJS is offering four different options and participants will be invited to select their preferences after their Academy application has been accepted. At the conclusion of each Special Interest Week is a free weekend where participants can spend time with family living in Israel.

AUJS Academy 3 2007/2008 Highlights, by Joshua Belinfante

On AUJS Academy you will live and breathe Israel! You will visit the most important Jewish historical and religious sites including The Kotel, Masada and the Old City of Jerusalem, make life-long friends, meet young Israelis; and experience the adventure and excitement that only a longer program in Israel allows.

You'll learn about and meet with some of Israel's other communities including the Bedouin and Druze. AUJS Academy also provides you with additional option weeks (Gadna - Army Training, Desert Experience, Political Issues, and Tikkun Olam) as well as a variety of fascinating educational seminars and two free weekends.

  • Gadna - A five day Israeli army experience. Gadna is a challenging program involving basic rifle training and various physical and intellectual activities.
  • Desert Experience - The desert experience option is an unforgettable journey into the beautiful wilderness that is the Negev.
  • Political Issues - This option aims to explore the various and complex political issues that face Israel today. Participants will gain knowledge of the diversity within the Israeli political system and meet significant figures from left and right wings of Israeli politics as well as Palestinian political representatives.
  • Tikkun Olam - This option is for participants who wish to contribute to Israeli society by way of volunteering and understanding. For five days, participants will volunteer with various organisations in Israel that aim to assist and help Israel's underprivileged.

You'll visit some of Israel's most important religious and historical sites, meet with young Israelis and tour spectacular countryside. AUJS Academy will give you an extraordinary experience that without doubt will leave you wanting more!
