On AUJS Academy you will live and breathe Israel for 5 weeks! You will visit the most important Jewish historical, religious and cultural sites including the Old City of Jerusalem, Masada and the Bahai Gardens in Haifa whilst making new friends, meeting young Israelis and experiencing the adventure and excitement that only AUJS Academy can provide. The entire length and breadth of Israel will be explored, from the green hills of the Galil to the rocky expanses in the Negev.

Participants experience Israeli society in all forms whilst dining with Bedouins, partying in Tel Aviv and Eilat and touring our ancient cities in their 21st century beauty. The program will give participants a chance to visit family and friends over two free weekends. Accommodation will be provided free of charge for participants who don’t have a place to stay during these periods.

In addition, 8 young Israelis will join AUJS Academy for 5 days. This allows participants to meet Israelis, learn some Hebrew and make great friends! Participants are also welcome to stay with these Israelis on their free weekends.

This program is recommended for school-leavers to age 23. AUJS Academy is an exciting, intensive touring and volunteering program.

Academy: Special Interest Weeks

In 2010, the 34 day AUJS Academy will include two periods of Special Interest weeks, providing participants the opportunity to explore a specific aspect of Israel. Each participant will need to choose 2 of these options:

Gadna: This 5 day Israeli Army Simulation experience is a physically and mentally challenging program including basic rifle training, physical activity and learning about the Israeli army. A typical day on the program includes eating in the base mess hall, physical training and classes about the Israeli army. See photos from previous Gadna experiences.

Desert Experience: Hike, camp and experience the Negev through an unforgettable journey into the desert wilderness. Walk up to 8km daily and learn about the surrounding environment in a stunning setting. See photos from previous Desert Experience weeks.

Politics: What really happens in Israeli politics? Who is 'us' and 'them'? This option examines Israelis' determination for political stability and its ongoing struggle for peace and security. Visit Sderot and the West Bank, hear engaging speakers and learn about Israeli advocacy in this engaging seminar. See photos from previous Politics weeks.

Teva: "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children"... Participants will have the chance to see firsthand Israelis' drive for environmental sustainability and development. See photos from previous Teva weeks.

Dates: 9th December 2010 – 13th January 2011

Cost: AU$3750 + US$3400
