Who We Are

AUJS is the peak student representative body for Australasian Jewish university students. One of our largest operations is the AUJS Israel Programs that have sent thousands of Jewish people to Israel since 1963.

Fundamentally, our program structure is based on short-term and longer-term experiences. In 2009/10 we are running the Aviv, Achshav, Academy and Poland Heritage Tour programs. For our organisation, Israel Program's are an opportunity to play a pivotal role in the lives of Jewish Young Adults from across Australasia. We believe that the decision to go on any program to Israel is one of the most important and best decisions that a Jewish Young adult can make.

First and foremost, our programs offer a first-hand opportunity to explore Israel. Our programs visit cities, villages, kibbutzim, seas, deserts, forests, mountains and borders. We spend time in both biblical and contemporary Israel.

Secondly, AUJS Israel Programs offer an incredible opportunity to meet and engage with Jewish peers from across Australasia. The majority of participants come from Melbourne, Sydney & Perth. Each year, we always also have participants from Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart and New Zealand.

Thirdly, AUJS Israel Programs offers contemporary and relevant education based on the foundations of AUJS' 4 pillars: Judaism, Zionism, Activism and Pluralism. AUJS Israel Programs respect and accept Jews from all backgrounds and streams of Judaism. We encourage participants to explore and express their own Judaism to the level that they feel comfortable. We facilitate educational experiences through informal programming, interaction with Israeli culture, meeting Israelis and hearing from some of Israel's best advocates and spokespeople.

Taglit - Birthright Israel

Taglit - Birthright Israel is a unique partnership between the people of Israel through their government, local Jewish communities (through the United Jewish Communities, Keren Hayesod and The Jewish Agency for Israel) and leading Jewish philanthropists.

Through this, Taglit - Birthright Israel provides a gift of a free 10-day educational tour of Israel for young Jewish adults aged 18-26 (17 if a school-leaver) who have never before participated in a peer-group educational trip to Israel.

The Zionist Federation of Australia Ltd (ZFA), together with the support and the initiative of the United Israel Appeal (UIA), is proud to represent the Australian Jewish community as the local partner in this exciting and ambitious project.
