What would you do?

What would you do?

AUJS' new campaign puts Israel in context by busting the myths and providing perspective on the current conflict.

What is the context?

  • On June 15th, Hamas and its allies once again declared open war against Israel. They fired an escalating barrage of rockets into Israeli communities.
  • Over 180 rockets targeted Israeli civilians between July 1 and July 7 alone.
  • Over 3.5 million Israelis are now endangered by the new, longer range rockets in Hamas’ arsenal of 10,000 rockets, which can reach as far as Haifa and Jerusalem.
  • Israelis have only 15 to 60 seconds to reach a bomb shelter after the red alert begins.
  • Normal life in Israel is impossible with these attacks.
    • The rockets damaged homes and communities.  Two factories burned to the ground.  One rocket hit a nursery school.  Summer camps and educational activities were cancelled across southern Israel, and wedding and religious celebrations were suddenly interrupted.
  • No nation would allow one rocket, let alone hundreds, to target its citizens.
    • Israel launched “Protective Edge” on July 8th to restore calm and force Hamas to stop its attacks.
  • President Obama, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, and other international leaders condemned Hamas rocket attacks and underscored Israel’s right—and responsibility—to protect its citizens.
  • Hamas’ ongoing aggression reflects its long-term goal: the murder of Jews and obliteration of the Jewish state.
    • Designated a terrorist organization by the U.S., EU, Canada, Japan, and Israel, Hamas opposes all negotiations and is committed to violence.  It was responsible for 40% of the suicide bombings and has fired over 12,000 rockets and mortars at Israel since Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. Since January, it has fired 450 rockets and mortars into Israel.
  • Israel seeks to protect innocent life.
    • Its civil defense system and Iron Dome save Israeli lives, and Israel attempts to protect innocent Gaza residents by warning them of impending attacks, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on July 9.
  • In contrast, Hamas intentionally endangers Palestinian civilians and targets Israeli civilians.
    • On July 8th, Hamas called upon the public to ignore Israeli warnings and to stand on the roofs of targeted buildings.  It celebrated the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens.  Its rockets aim at civilian centers, and its goal is the murder of Israelis. Its spokespeople issue grisly warnings, such as on July 8th, “Zionists, wait and see stabbing attacks everywhere. Wait for suicide attacks on every bus, café and street…. start counting the number of coffins you’ll need in these months.”
  • Hamas has been pumping out horrifying pictures and other propaganda to demonize Israel’s self-defense operation.
    • The BBC already reported that the pictures Hamas claimed were from “Protective Edge” were actually from 2009 or earlier, or of atrocities in Iraq and Syria.
  • Hamas is akin to ISIS, Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations sweeping across the Middle East. They are extremist, genocidal, anti-Semitic organizations that threaten all liberal democracies.

Israel Mythbusters

Myth

Israel targets civilians

Fact

No military in human history has done so much to avoid civilian casualties. Israel drops leaflets, makes phone calls, sends text messages, releases flares, and cancels missions if there is substantial threat to civilians.

Myth

Hamas are freedom fighters

Fact

Hamas is a globally recognised terrorist organisation that has been indiscriminately firing rockets at Israeli civilians, its leadersare telling Palestinians to go onto rooftops and expose their “bare chests” to rocket fire. Hamas' charter specifically calls for the complete destruction of the Israeli state, and the murder of all Jews.

Myth

Hamas cares about Palestinians

Fact

Hamas tells its citizens to not leave buildings when Israel gives warnings about incoming strikes, Hamas has spent tens of millions building tunnels into Israel (to send fighters into Israel), not on food, education, or health care and have reportedly used children to build these terror tunnels.

Myth

This conflict is due to Israel's continual building of settlements

Fact

All Israeli settlements were withdrawn from Gaza in 2005, and full control handed over to Palestinians. Soon afterwards terrorist organisation Hamas violently took power.

Myth

Israel does not want peace

Fact

Israel has consistently offered peace agreements to Palestinians that have been refused, including in 1998, 2001, and 2008. In contrast, Hamas has consistently rejected ceasefire offers in recent weeks, responding instead with escalating rocket fire into Israel.

Myth

Israel is an apartheid state

Fact

Over one million Arabs have equal citizenship rights, work rights, political rights, and social welfare rights as any other Israeli. These individuals have amongstthe highest standard of living for any Arab in the Middle East
