AUJS Statement on Reclaim Australia Rallies

AUJS emphatically denounces the 'Reclaim Australia' rallies

By Aujs / April 08, 2015

AUJS emphatically denounces the 'Reclaim Australia' rallies held around the country over the weekend and the bigotry of all those seeking to malign the Australian Muslim community. This statement reflects both the views of our National Executive and the majority of our members and supporters who have communicated with us their feelings on the rallies.

As Jews, we understand more than most what it means to be the victims of bigotry, discrimination and incitement because of who we are. It is incumbent on us to have empathy and show support for others who become victims themselves.

The campaign to ban Halal products, which crosses the line of religious intolerance, is one step away from a campaign to ban Kosher products. The 'Kosher Nostra' conspiracy theory is just one reason why we should be empathetic to our fellow Australians. The sight of Nazi imagery and swastikas at the rallies only reinforce the appalling prejudice and hate at its core.

Fittingly, during Passover, yesterday's Torah reading reminds us to empathise with the stranger, "for you know the spirit of the stranger, because you were strangers in Egypt".
